LaTanya Glass My track and field journey started during my elementary school days. During the summer playground activities we participated in track meets against all the elementary schools in our area. We won numerous track championship meets at my 116th Street Elem. School in Los Angeles for many years. From elementary school, Jr. High, high school and post college days, I have always loved sports, esp. track & field. My idol has always been Olympian Wilma Rudolph who continues to inspire me to this day. During my high school graduation I was voted the most outstanding girls’ athlete of my class; Willie Crawford, the most outstanding boys’ athlete.

My Sunday school friend told me about a girl’s track team in Compton, CA. during my high school days. I joined the Compton Track & Field AAU team under Coach Tom Clayton, assist’s Calvin Brown, Dave Jackson and Dr. Whitmore was our sponsor. We participated in AAU girls and women track meets against competitive AAU teams as L.A. Mercuretts, L.B. Comets, Santa Ynez, Pasadena teams, etc. We also competed against competitive women such as Marta Watson, Marilyn White, Florence Griffith, Chi Cheng, and etc. Most of our AAU championships were held at Mt. Sac., Ventura County, and L.B. State.

I graduated from Long Beach State and often practiced on the track field where I met my husband, Bill Glass, and men’s track Coach Jack Rose. It was pre Title IX during this time and no women’s track team.

I was introduced to Master’s Track & Field while practicing at Dominguez Hills College during my late 30’s. There I met Masters athletes Dave Jackson & Big Al Henry who were members of the Corona Del Mar team that included other members such as Christel Miller, Louis Beadle, etc. I joined the Corona Del Mar team until it folded and thereafter, I competed unattached.

My journey to the Striders track team happened when I competed at masters track meets in San Diego and Long Beach State where I met Brenda Mathew. We became friends/competitors and Brenda invited me to join the Striders. I’ve competed in numerous masters track/field events including sprints 100/200 meters, LJ, HJ, SP, javelin, discus. My favorite current events: pentathlon, HJ, SP. I truly enjoy being a member of the So. California Striders team and competing in master’s track & field at our local meets and venues all over the world.
