History

The Original Striders

In the fall of 1955 five outstanding track and field athletes founded the original Southern California Striders.

Mal Whitfield, George Brown, Lang Stanley, George Rhoden, and Meredith C. Gourdine (nickname: Flash) soon attracted other talented athletes to the club. During the following years the Southern California Striders became a dominant force in track and field.
On February 19, 1970, Toby Medina approached the executive board to start a Masters Division of the Southern California Striders for athletes over 40. The Master Striders were established in a move that was consistent with the Strider’s goal of making a contribution to track and field.

Currently the Southern California Striders Masters Track and Field Club remains one of the most active and successful clubs competing. The membership stands at over 80 athletes, men and women (youths, open, sub-masters, and masters).
